Overheard in the bike trailer
September 6, 2009
Col and Rose are riding in the bike trailer together, powered by Dan. The bike trailer, which compresses two small people into a very small space (with added collectable flotsam: screws, a matted bunny, bags of crushed snacks) can be a place of fierce fighting (“Col’s pulling my hair!” “That’s because she’s pinching me”), mischevious conspiring (“Rose, throw your shoes out!”), or this unexpected gem:
Rose: Coley, I put my arm around you.
Col: Why?
Rose: Because you love me.

Hi Rachel,
I just love it! And you bet I am going to share this with my friends! Ain’t Life Grand! You truly are a talented writer.
This past Thursday I taught my class Children’s Medicine Chest to 15 women and 2 newborns. I only have 10 chairs at my store (as the space is tight) and 15 women showed up and there was standing room only! I am still a little shell shocked from the whole situation but certainly hoping for more!
I know this may be a far cry, but if you ever are in Denver I would love for you to see my little store in the big city. The past four weeks we have had someone almost every day come in to ask if we are a medicinal marijuana clinic…. We’ll I can only hope that ganja will open the door to herbal medicine as a whole.
Peace,
Laura Golub
humm, maybe I should not have posted that on your blog…feel free to delete. Love, laura
LOVE those moments…the best!!!! Charlie and Riley told me they were getting married yesterday. They are also both going to be policemen – well, Riley informed me that she would be a “girl policeman”. And then they asked if policemen get married – i said, “sure, anyone can get married if they want” and they said, “Ok, so we’ll get married”……
I heard about your writing from Sabrina, enjoyed what I read and will keep reading
Rachel, I was instantly hooked when I read this: (”Col’s pulling my hair!” “That’s because she’s pinching me”), mischevious conspiring (”Rose, throw your shoes out!”), or this unexpected gem:
Rose: Coley, I put my arm around you.
Col: Why?
Rose: Because you love me.
Thanks to your/our friend Sabrina for the heads up on this blogger. I will be adding you to my favorites and sharing you with my friends too!

Ah, I miss the two-in-the-trailer days. I know exactly what you’re talking about – that blend of bickering and bliss. Take pictures. It’s stunning how quickly their growing little butts sag dangerously toward the pavement.
I love how you capture the kids’ language and can re-create whole dialogues.
Thank you so much for sharing this blog with us. You writing is such a joy to read. Megan and I have a 6 year old (Eliza), a 4 year old (Mason) and a 1 year old puppy (Susan).
I can relate to many of the things you write about and it so comforting to know you are not alone in this. Say hello to Dan for me.
